Baltic 2 OWF

33kV Inner Array Grid Cable System

Seaway Offshore Cables was awarded the contract for the turnkey engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning (EPIC) works related to the inner array grid cable system of the Baltic II Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) project by EnBW Baltic 2.

The OWF is situated approx. 30 km north of the island of Rügen within the German sector of the Baltic Sea. The OWF consists of 80 wind turbine generators, each with a capacity of 3.6 MW and is based on an inner array grid of 86 medium voltage copper core submarine composite cables with a total length of up to 88km.

The submarine composite cables were manufactured and supplied by Draka Norge on behalf of the client and were subsequently installed by Seaway Offshore Cables utilising dedicated in-house resources such as the AHTS Siem Garnet.

SOC worked with EnBW to overcome many challenges including difficult seabed conditions and a compressed installation window.”

Jonathan Linton
Project Manager

A combination of pre-trenching, jet trenching and gravel placement was applied and optimized in close cooperation with EnBW.  SOC was also able to maintain non-stop cable laying operations over the winter, even in snowy and sub-zero conditions to avoid any project delays.  SOC was complemented in its flexible and solution-oriented approach through the project contributing to it success
